Summary
The concept of the Montessori pedagogy, which emphasizes a child-center educational
approach, is based on the triangulation of the factors of a supportive environment,
thoughtfully prepared learning materials and a teacher, which appears as an observer and a
moderator of activity. The function of the Montessori materials is in encouragement of
understanding abstract musical-theoretical terms at the concrete operational thinking,
with physicaly and mentaly action. The Montessori pedagogy is mainly involved in
kindergartens and two primary schools within the private sector in the Slovene territory,
while the concept is not found in the Slovenian music-school education. In contribution
we present the project Development of the Montessori learning materials for usage in
teaching Music theory in music school, which was carried out by the Academy of Music in
Ljubljana, in cooperation with the private music school Arsem and the private Montessori
kindergarten Children’s House Cinca Binca. The aim of the five-months project, in which
were involved pupils of the 2nd, 4th and the 5th grade, was in the production of learning
materials and aplication of the Montessori pedagogy in teaching practice of the subject
Music theory. The results of the project showed its postitive effects especially in the
development of rhythmically abilities and musical literacy. Individual observations have
shown that the pre-prepared learning materials were attractive to pupils, increased
motivation for learning, and encouraged independence and sovereignty in the individual’s
personal development.
