Sustainability Competences of Geography Students
This paper analyzes the integration of sustainable development in under-
graduate and postgraduate geography curricula at the UP Faculty of Human-
ities. The study examined learning objectives and competencies, finding that
sustainability-related competences are well represented in the single-subject
Master’s programme, moderately present in the Bachelor’s programme, and
least evident in the dual-subject pedagogical Master’s programme. Most com-
petences relate to environmental topics, with fewer linked to social issues such
as poverty and inequality, and the least to economic aspects. A survey con-
ducted among students during the 2024/2025 academic year assessed their
knowledge and awareness of sustainable development. We found that they
evaluate their knowledge of sustainable development as good, that formal
education constitutes an important source of this knowledge, and that the in-
clusion of such content in study programmes is important. Most participants
believe that they have already adapted their behaviour based on their knowl-
edge of sustainable development.
