Understanding Curriculum Reform to Improve the Quality of Physical
Education Teacher Training
The promotion of lifelong physical activity is a central task of formal educa-
tion, as it is closely linked to individual health, vitality, and performance. In the
Slovenian education system, physical education plays an important role in the
development of motor skills and healthy lifestyle habits. This paper uses the
narrative literature review method to examine definitions of the concept of
physical literacy and analyses how understanding the foundations and pro-
cess of curriculum reform at the primary and secondary education levels can
contribute to improving higher education for future physical education teach-
ers. The findings indicate that physical literacy has become a central concept
in contemporary pedagogical approaches to physical education and has been
incorporated into the latest curriculum reform of the subject Physical Educa-
tion in Slovenia. The model integrates physical, cognitive, social, and emo-
tional dimensions and emphasises the importance of meaningful, inclusive,
and sustainable movement experiences. In order to achieve optimal and sus-
tainable results in the educational process, it is crucial that teacher educators
are familiar with the professional dilemmas and solutions that have been in-
troduced into the renewed curriculum during the process of reform by the
subject-specific curriculum commission.
