Integrating Film into Education
The article presents benefits and obstacles of integrating film into education.
It refers to previous studies (Bazalgette 2009; Brooks, Cooper and Penke 2011;
Bergala 2017) when it lists the educators’ and students’ views on positive im-
pacts of film education. Specifically, it analyses the perspectives that moving
image education improves the (excluded) learners’ attitudes towards curricu-
lar contents and provides skills for interpreting narrative texts as well as intro-
duces new concepts of literacy. The second part of the article presents the ob-
stacles for integrating film in schools, namely; (a) inadequate training of teach-
ers in the field of film education; (b) the fact that film education reaches only a
small proportion of students and is not usually recognised in national curricula
across Europe; (c) the lack of adequate pedagogical tools and infrastructure;
(d) the lack of statistics providing a comprehensive overview of the operation
modes and effectiveness of film education; (e) inadequate funding of film ed-
ucation initiatives.
