Summary
and importance of SSS in the discovery (detection and identification)
of gifted students, and in the creation of an individualized curriculum
for gifted students. An important contribution of the chapter is also the
description ofsomecounselingservices(in learning,in theprofessional
area, in the area of self-understanding of the gifted).
– The area of testing, assessment and student progress contains brief, basic
content starting points with the presentation of legal provisions (rules)
and adjustments in the process of testing and assessment of student
knowledge.
– Career guidance shows the field of vocational education, guidelines for
SSS in collaboration with all stakeholders in the process of career gui-
dance and prevention programs.
– Eating disorders and the help of the school counseling center is the con-
tent chosen by theauthors becausetheyfacegrowing problems (espe-
cially of girls) in the field of eating disorders. Although the problems are
beyond the professional competencies of the counselor, it is important
that he be sensitive to them, attentive and ready for the procedures
that follow when he perceives eating disorders in a child. In doing so,
they point out the prevention programs that can be implemented in
the school.
– Peer violence is a current issue that is presented in detail from different
aspects (definition, types, activities of SSS in relation to different ac-
tors). The focus is on how to recognize SSS and how to act in case of
peer violence (immediate and procedural intervention). They also pre-
sent the school’s prevention programs.
– Domestic violence is a taboo subject in Slovenia, especially in relation
to sexual and physical violence. They clarify the content through some
legal starting points and rules, define the types of domestic violence,
clearly present the basic steps in perceiving domestic violence and pre-
sent recommendations for providing help to a child victim of violence.
Of particular importance is protocol, which is systematically defined
through various documentation. The chapter concludes with sexual vi-
olence and some important prevention programs in sexual violence.
– Dealing with the death and grief of a child is also an underrepresented
topic in educational institutions. The author presents in detail the pro-
cess of coping with grief when a child is lost (phases, characteristics)
and the role of SSS in this process. She especially points out the co-
unseling support that the SSS should offer to all those involved in the
grieving process.
