NIMIR CIGLIÈ (1921–2006)

ART SONGS OF ZVONIMIR CIGLIÈ

Summary
An art song does not represent the main focus of Zvonimir Cigliè’s
composing career, as he wrote only six: Tri pesmi (“Three Songs”) for high voice
and piano, Dve pesmi (“Two Songs”) for middle voice and piano, and Eros
Thanatos for baritone and piano. Nevertheless, composing them throughout his
career, they provide us with valuable insight into different periods of the
composer’s life. Combining seemingly disparate ideas, Cigliè’s art songs elude
stylistic categorization; most appropriately, Cigliè might be placed among latent
expressionists. In his art songs, he is constantly inclined toward expressionism,
but at the same time he does not utilize the compositional arsenal of tone rows,
typical for his expressionistic contemporaries. By including some impressionistic
and neo-baroque elements, he intuitively uses those means he finds most suitable
at a given moment.
