The Effect of Two Additional Hours of Physical Education
in Extracurricular Programmes on the Physical Activity
                  of Younger Primary School Children
The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of two additional hours
of physical education during after-school care on the amount and intensity of
physical activity of children during school hours and beyond. Two deliberately
                  selected primary schools insouth-eastSloveniawith44childreningrades1–3
took part in the study: 25 in the experimental group (EG), which received two
additional hoursof physical education in addition to the regular timetable, and
19 in the control group (CG), which did not receive these additional hours. The
children wore the accelerometers for five consecutive days. Data were consid-
ered valid if the devices were worn for at least 9.6 hours per day on at least
two days. A one-way ANOVA was used to compare physical activity between
the two groups. The results showed that the total physical activity of the EG
averaged 1921.1 ± 421.6 counts per minute, with sedentary activity still domi-
nating (27.2 minutes), followed by light (11.9 minutes), moderate (11.7 minutes)
and vigorous physical activity (9.2 minutes). During one hour of after-school
sports, the EG achieved 20.9 minutes of moderate to vigorous physical activity.
Additional after-school physical education hours led by a physical education
teacher were found to be effective in meeting daily physical activity recom-
mendations. Therefore, we recommend the implementation of a longer-term,
multi-component intervention in schools, focussing on structured physical ed-
ucation content, in a larger population and in different regions.
