Possibilities of Using Generative Artificial Intelligence for Children
with Special Needs
The article outlines the areas where generative artificial intelligence (GEN-AI) may
benefit different groups of children with special needs (SN) in terms of progress and
development. Since this topic remains relatively unexplored in Slovenia, we relied on
examples from foreign authors who describe the potential of GEN-AI to help over-
come the deficits or obstacles for individuals with SN across various ages and social
contexts. GEN-AI can assist them in particularly challenging areas, such as creating
schedules, suggesting activities for well-being, offering fashion advice, converting
text or speech to sign language and vice versa, enhancing participation on digital
platforms, making flashcards for phonological awareness training, and simulating
communication. With the help of GEN-AI, individuals with SN can improve their in-
dependence, social inclusion, autonomy, and equality and thus better leverage their
strengths. However, certain risks are associated with using GEN-AI tools as they may
