The cardinal number system in language contact:
A comparison of Resian and Molise Slavic
This paper deals with a comparison of the numeral systems of two
Slavic minority languages in Italy: Slovene-based Resian in the
northern region of Friuli-Venezia Giulia and Molise Slavic in the
southern region of Molise, historically related to Croatian. In both
cases, language contact with Romance varieties plays an important
role, especially in Molise Slavic, where higher numbers (≥ 5) tend to
be replaced by borrowings or have entirely been lost (> 10, except
for 100). In Resian, on the other hand, all inherited Slavic numbers
< 1000, including 200, 300 etc., are still known by the speakers, al-
though higher numbers are rarely used in everyday situations. In-
terestingly, the traditional numeral system of Resian is character-
ised by special forms for the decades ≥ 40 and their composites,
based on “rows of ten” and including vigesimal numbers. In the do-
main of declension, both the inflection of the numbers themselves
as well as of the nouns and adjectives they govern are analysed,
with typical differences caused by the existence of a dual (Resian)
