Team-Sport Injury Prevention Cycle: A Cyclical Approach
in Team Sports
One of the more recent conceptual models of injury prevention in team
sports is the Team-Sport Injury Prevention (TIP) cycle, proposed by
O’Brien et al. (2019). The model provides a systematic pathway from risk
assessment to intervention and subsequent re-assessment, thereby en-
abling the continuous refinement and adaptation of programmes (Figure
4.2). It illustrates how evidence-based injury-prevention programmes
can be developed and implemented in sport and is founded on the prin-
ciple that injury prevention is not a one-off event, but rather a cyclical
process that is continuously evaluated and improved.
The model comprises three key phases (O’Brien et al., 2019):
• (Re)evaluation: assessing the current status of injuries, risk profiles,
and needs within a team or sporting population;
• Identification: determining risk factors, barriers to the implementa-
tion of preventive measures, and selecting appropriate strategies;
