IDEOLOŠKA RECEPCIJA KRŠČANSTVA V PREŠERNOVEM KRSTU PRI SAVICI IN V PESNITVI
BRÉBEUF AND HIS BRETHRENS EDWINA JOHNA PRATTA
Ti so v obeh primerih – običajno odvisno

IDEOLOGY IN THE RECEPTION OF THE CHRISTIANITY IN THE BAPTISM ON THE SAVICA BY F.
PREŠEREN AND IN BRÉBEUF AND HIS BRETHREN BY EDWIN JOHN PRATT
In addition to national interpellation in both, Prešeren’s Krst pri Savici (The Baptism on the Savica) and Brébeuf
and His Brethren by E. J. Pratt, also share a problematic representation of Christianity, which stimulated
extremely diverse responses in the reception of the two poems. In both cases the responses ranged from
understanding the poems as a Christian apology to the opinion that they were an explicit critique of
Christianity and religion, while the criteria for reception often depended on the worldview of readers. The
diversity of interpretations of The Baptism can also be attributed to differences in the interpretation of
Prešeren’s attitude towards liberal ideology and the ideology of Christianity following the death of Prešeren’s
friend Matija Čop. In Pratt’s case, however, the diversity of interpretations most likely stems from the contrast
between the Jesuit background of the Christian mission in the Indian territories, and Protestantism, the
predominant religion in Canada and the foundation of Pratt’s beliefs. Pratt was also an active cleric for some
time.
Key words: Christianity, ideology, literary reception, Krst pri Savici, Brébeuf and his Brethren
