Darja Koter, VPLIV JURÈETA VRE ETA NA RAZVOJ MLADINSKIH PEVSKIH ZBOROV ...

Summary

Jurèe Vre e (1906-1987) was a teacher, choirmaster, and organizer of choral seminars as
well as of youth choir festivals. He was educated at the State College of Education for Men
in Maribor, where two influential teachers, Hinko Druzoviè and Emerik Beran, taught him
as well as several versatile musicians and choirmasters such as Radovan Gobec, Jurèe
Vre e, Makso Pirnik, Emil Ulaga, Jo e Zorn, Dragotin Cvetko, and others. Some of them
were founders of The Youth Choir Choirmasters’ Association in 1937, which meant the
beginning of the development of youth choirs in the wider Styria region. Vre e worked as
a teacher in Šoštanj and was one of the first to encourage the creation of young singers’
choirs, which included selected talented singing children. In the second half of the 1930s,
he and his colleagues from the teaching school pioneered and organized seminars for
teachers-choirmasters and regional singing festivals. This had greatly influenced the
setting up of choirs and raising their quality. In wider Styria, a strong choral movement
emerged, with far-reaching effects. Vre e also influenced the modernization of the
singing repertoire. He encouraged the Slovene composers to create stylistic content and
contemporary works and strived for their publishing and implementation. Although the
Second World War stopped the youth choral movement, Vre e revived it and continued to
develop it with his enthusiasm and clear goals after the Second World War. He advocated
a systematic singing education of young people as well as the education of choirmasters
and tried to introduce choral singing in all elementary schools, which he succeeded in
doing in the long run. Under Vre e’s leadership, the choirmasters of the wider area of
Celje in 1946, with a massive performance of 3000 singers, confirmed his vision and
developed them further. This event marks the beginning of the Youth Choir Festival in
Celje, which has been regularly held since 1958 and has soon grown from a regional
festival to a renowned international singing event with a competitive character. Jurèe
Vre e, considered its concept leader, influenced numerous transformations and was a
central figure of the festival for many years.
