Developing Digital Competences in Pre-Service Language Teacher
Training by Means of Digital Storytelling
The constant evolution of technology and global social changes is reshaping
education systems, urging a rethinking of teaching methods and approaches,
including language education. Integrating digital and sustainability compe-
tences into pre-service language teacher training is crucial for fostering global
citizenship and educational innovation. Digital storytelling, as a multimedia-
supported narrative methodology, proves effective in developing communi-
cation, critical thinking, and collaborative skills aligned with 21st-century ed-
ucational goals. This paper presents a qualitative study, conducted within the
latest modernisation of university curricula for Italian philology and language
teaching. Students and teachers participated in workshops using digital sto-
rytelling to assess its usability and applicability in actual teaching contexts.
Results show teachers’ high engagement in participation and their growing
awareness of the approach’s educational value, despite challenges arising
from time management, assessment, and technology access, related to the
approach. Introduction of digital narrative tools, like infographics and story-
boards, in teacher training offers a promising path to the integration of multi-
