Views of Preschool Teachers and Teachers on Integrating
Cross-curricular Approaches into Their Pedagogical Work
Sustainable development is based on complex interactions between the envi-
ronment, the economy and society. Understanding and overcoming the chal-
lenges of sustainability therefore requires educational approaches that inte-
grate different areas of knowledge. Preschool and primary school teachers
play a key role in developing sustainability skills in children, as interdisciplinary
teaching enables a holistic approach to sustainability issues. Interdisciplinary
learning encourages reflection and critical thinking and contributes to the
development of knowledge and skills needed to meet the challenges of the
twenty-first century. Although education professionals recognise the benefits
of interdisciplinary approaches to the quality of teaching and learning, they
face various obstacles when planning and implementing such approaches.
School teachers often cite lack of time due to overloaded curricula as the main
