was reproduced with proper urban clothes, often reflected in the fashion
of the places where people emigrated. Among the distinctive elements that
characterized them, there are letters, with which they maintained rela-
tions with the country and the family from a distance, or books of ac-
counts. The women, on the other hand, were portrayed in festive dress,
typical of the fashion of their community, incorporating accessories typical
of their work, such as aprons (Ganzer and Argentieri Zanetti 1990; Ferigo
and Lorenzini 2006, 139–49). This is how Giacomina De Corte, wife of Gio
Batta Billiani, was portrayed in a painting in 1763 when she was perhaps
just over thirty years old (Pugnetti 2006, 306–8). In her hands she keeps a
set of keys, with which to lock doors, cabinets and chests, where tradition-
ally they kept the documents and with them the books of accounts.
