Abstract
Tourism in Slovenia is an important part of the economy, generating a
significant share of gross domestic product and providing many jobs.
Tourism as an economic activity is affected by various changes, inclu-
ding the crisis.
We have analysed the Gorenjska tourist destination, which is the
second most important tourist destination in Slovenia in terms of
tourism development, tourist capacities, tourist arrivals and tourist
overnight stays. In terms of tourist arrivals and overnight stays, the
Gorenjska tourist destination has a share of around one fifth in Slo-
venia. The focus is on economic performance in the development of
tourism in the region and on the sustainable development of the to-
urist destination. The tourist offer in Gorenjska is being restructured
to offer different niches in the structure of existing and expected de-
mand. The average length of stay of tourists has fallen below three
days. The sustainable development of tourism in Gorenjska, through
the development of quality services and tourist infrastructure, is seen
as a particular challenge in the direction of tourist demand and the
long-term sustainable development of the tourist destination.
We have analysed the tourism offer situation in the Alpine tourist
destination with the tourist centres of Bled, Bohinj and Kranjska Gora
in the Gorenjska region. The number of overnight stays of tourists flu-
ctuates. The average length of stay of domestic and foreign guests has
decreased from 3.15 days in 2008 to 2.72 days in 2015. 35 % of visitors
are domestic, who spend less money during their visits than before the
crisis and demand more affordable products. In 2017, there were 7,085
accommodation units in Bohinj, 6,923 in Bled and 6,852 in Kranjska
Gora.
According to statistics, tourism is one of the leading economic
sectors in Slovenia. In 2015, tourism accounted for almost 13 % of Slo-
venia’s gross social product, and more than 150,000 jobs were directly
and indirectly linked to tourism. In the same year, Slovenia recorded
