O VREMŠAK (1930–2004)
ORCHESTRAL WORKS BY SAMO VREMŠAK
Summary
The composer Samo Vremšak (1930–2004) left a significant orchestral oeuvre as well as
other outstanding compositions. The basis of his oeuvre consists of compositions for
symphonic orchestra (3 Symphonies, Dramatic Overture, Scherzo, Adagio, Passacaglia,
Suite and Concert for Organ and Orchestra), as well as his works for chamber orchestra
ensembles (Concertino, Sonatina, Seven Miniatures, Concert for Organ and String
Instruments, Simfonietta), Rhapsody for brass orchestra, and his works for orchestra,
choir and soloists (Coronation in Zagreb, Maria and A Miller, Exercitus grandis nimis
valde, Requiem, Jubilate Deo, Te Deum etc.). As such, the oeuvre of Vremšak comprises
29 units which have been rather insufficiently presented until now. His orchestral and
orchestral-vocal composition sentences maintain their tonal core, yet they also contain
some contemporary compositional elements. The main characteristic of the sentence is its
clear thematic, stressed basis, sometimes as a modal polyphone sentence, harmonic
nuances with strong harmonic and melodically chromatic approaches (even the use of
heterogeneous sound surface), and a clear, almost classical music form. It is difficult to
capture it precisely in terms of style; it could be defined with one of the modern
“neo-“expressions. Nevertheless, a more detailed explanation of Vremšak’s oeuvre will
see the light only as a result of a thorough analysis of all his orchestral works.
