cern baptisms in the Tomaj village only.¹⁰ This way, of the total 126 Černe
godfatherhoods out of the family between 1690 and 1784, 92 remained,
equalling 73 percent; consequently, a good quarter of the times they acted
as godfathers in another village of the parish.
The resulting graph (figure 4.3) shows a higher share of Černe godfathers
at baptisms in Tomaj village outside their own family in the years around
1700, 1710 and 1720, although intermittently (only in part due to incom-
plete records). The first period of constant high shares is recorded around
1750, then in the decades between the end of the eighteenth and the begin-
ning of the nineteenth century, with a last surge around 1850, after which
the rate hardly surpasses 10 percent of baptisms. In the second half of the
nineteenth century until 1914 the rate decreases and the appearances at
